I’ve read Genesis 24 a number of times, but after reading this chapter again, it became very clear to me that God is indeed involved in the process of choosing our mates. However, we must still seek His approval and His blessings. Let’s take a peek into this chapter as Abraham’s servant prepares himself to head out on a journey to find a wife for Isaac.
Genesis 24:1-4
And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
In this passage, we see a couple of things unfold:
Abraham has gotten old in age and wants to ensure Isaac meets his wife. So, to ensure this, he requires his servant (Eliezer) to swear to an oath that he would not search in Canaan (heathen/unbeliever’s territory) to find a wife for Isaac but rather go to their home land. Eliezer traveled 500 miles to get to Rebecca!
Case In Point: Brothers – when we begin our search, it’s important that we understand where NOT to go in search of our wives. Any woman that doesn’t believe
in the God we serve is off limits! There is no if, ands or buts about this one. A woman like this would be dangerous and a snare for your soul. She must be a believer in Jesus Christ –as God manifested in a human body and not just as a good man or prophet.
Genesis 24:5-6
And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
Case In Point: She must be willing to come. In other words, is she willing to follow you where God is leading you? Don’t you dare follow after her. Stay where you are in your land of promise. Leaving this place would have opened Isaac up to many temptations.
Ok. I’m going to skip a bit but follow me please to verse 14. Something amazing unfolds in it that’s going to be a tremendous blessing to you.
Genesis 24:14
And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Wow! Did you catch that? Watch the points:
1st Eliezer is in prayer starting in verse 12 about selecting the right one for Isaac. Before seeking a wife, we need to pray men. Eliezar said, “I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.”
2nd He knows the heart of Isaac and the heart of the woman who would be the perfect match for him. He laid out specific instructions that were consistent with Isaac’s assignment. He needed to find a woman with a true servant’s heart.
3rd She was God’s appointment for Isaac! This wasn’t some random selection folks. I’m sure many women came by but only one was appointed of God. Eliezar said, “let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.”
Listen – say what you want to and believe what you may BUT it is clear to me that God was involved in this process. In fact, He appointed Rebekah for Isaac!
7-Points To Finding Your Good Thing
• Pray for God’s favor and kindness as you begin your search
• Don’t engage in a relationship with an unbeliever
• Don’t settle for someone who’s not willing to follow you
• Don’t settle for a woman who can simply identify where you came from – Familiarity breathes contempt!
• Seek her where the Holy Spirit leads you
• Know your purpose so that you’ll know the heart of the woman you need
• Seek God to see if she’s been appointed to you!
Finally, here’s a scripture passage I want to leave with you in this quest.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
